Smart Design and Manufacturing Systems Lab

The mission of the Smart Design and Manufacturing Systems Lab is to accelerate product realization through intelligent strategies and tools that integrate, leverage, and enable the processes, personnel, and data of design and manufacturing enterprises.

Advanced projects that the lab investigates include:

  • Methods and tools to integrate engineering design with manufacturing;
  • Computing and communication infrastructures to simplify, normalize, and accelerate product realizations used throughout the product life cycle;
  • Engineering design processes focusing on socio-technical design methodologies, and crowdsourcing for collective innovation; and
  • Intelligent and data-driven systems that allow for better and faster technical and business decisions.

The Smart Design and Manufacturing Systems Lab is directed by Janis Terpenny, Peter and Angela Dal Pezzo Chair and Department Head of the Harold and Inge Marcus Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering. The Smart Design and Manufacturing Systems Lab is located in 364 Leonhard Building.
