Mentor Participation and Eligibility

Registration for the 2023-2024 academic year program is being accepted! To sign up for the program, please register here.

What is a mentor?

A mentor is defined in the Oxford Dictionary as an “experienced and trusted adviser.” This description reflects how Penn State Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering Society (PSIMES) mentors will typically work with their Penn State IME student mentees. A mentor's role is to inspire, encourage, and support their mentee and play an integral role in their development.

As a mentor, you will have the opportunity to use your experience and knowledge in a facilitative manner to support the development of the mentee; however, the responsibility for making things happen and putting plans into action lies primarily with the mentee - not with the mentor.

Registration Information

The mentoring program is open to all Penn State Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering alumni and members of the PSIMES on a voluntary basis.

  • Recent graduates, who may be interested in sharing their experiences making the transition from college to professional life, are welcome to register. The PSIMES program is a great way outside of your formal career to continue improving your leadership skills.
  • Retired Alumni, who may be interested in sharing their variety of experiences and networking relationships, are also welcome to register. The PSIMES program can help alumni stay connected with the greater industrial and manufacturing field.

Please note that after registration, mentors will receive an email notification once they have been approved for the program.

A few weeks after mentor registration and approval, students will receive a link to a portal with the available mentors to begin selection. Both parties will receive an email notification once a match has been made. It is the mentor’s responsibility to make first contact with the students within two weeks.
